What you need

Before class: Lay out the print. Build a one-page price sheet: flooring $/sq ft, paint coverage (a common planning figure is ~350 sq ft per gallon — use your can's actual number), gallon price, ceiling height (e.g., 8 ft). Assign rooms.

How the lesson runs

  1. Flooring takeoff: teams measure each assigned room and total the floor area, walking every room they price.

  2. Wall takeoff: measure each room's perimeter, multiply by the given ceiling height, subtract a standard allowance per door and window opening — that is the paintable area.

  3. Convert to purchasable units: divide paint area by coverage per gallon, apply a 10% waste factor to flooring, and ROUND UP to whole units. Why must estimators round up?

  4. Price it: extend quantities against the unit-price sheet into a materials list with a total.

  5. Bid review: teams swap lists and audit one number from each other's takeoff — re-measure and verify, exactly as a bid reviewer would.

Differentiation

  1. Special education and IEP/504 support: Assign one room with a structured worksheet that walks each computation; partner handles recording.

English language learners: Trade-vocabulary cards (takeoff, waste factor, coverage, extend) with icons; the worksheet's math is language-light.

Extension for students who finish early: Add trim: linear feet of baseboard from perimeters, priced per 8-ft stick. Challenge: the client cuts the budget 15% — propose material substitutions that hit the number without changing scope.

  • Why add a waste factor to flooring? — Cuts, breakage, and pattern matching consume material beyond the measured area.

  • A bid that under-measures by 10% wins the job. What happens next? — The contractor eats the shortfall or fights for a change order — accurate takeoffs protect the business.
