How Life-Size Floor Plans Work: From PDF to a Walkable 1:1 Layout

Big Floor Plans converts a customer-supplied floor-plan PDF into a durable physical layout printed at true 1:1 horizontal scale. The process is intentionally simple: send the current scaled PDF, review a digital production proof, approve production, receive the printed plan by FedEx Ground, deploy it on a suitable reasonably flat surface, verify the printed calibration reference when included, and use the layout as a shared physical review surface.

Standard printing is $0.45 per printed square foot with a $100 minimum order. Shipping is calculated separately. Digital production proofs are typically prepared in approximately 48 hours after usable project information is received, and typical production is approximately 5–7 business days after proof approval.

The Four-Step Big Floor Plans Process

1. Send the Current Scaled PDF

A clear scaled PDF is the normal production input. Vector PDF is preferred when available because linework and text generally remain sharper when enlarged to true 1:1 scale. Files originating in AutoCAD, Revit, Archicad, SketchUp or similar software should generally be exported to PDF before submission.

Architects, designers and in-house drafters may reduce nonessential working layers before export when appropriate. Homeowners and other clients who already have a current project PDF can submit that file for review. Big Floor Plans reproduces customer-supplied information; it does not independently redesign or approve the plan.

2. Review and Approve the Digital Proof

Big Floor Plans prepares a digital production proof, typically in approximately 48 hours after usable project information is received. The designated project contact should confirm the correct plan version, printed area, scale, orientation, labels, calibration references and any requested project-specific graphics before approving production.

Nothing should be treated as current merely because it was printed previously. If the governing project information changes, the project team should determine whether the printed layout still represents the current design.

3. Production and FedEx Ground Shipping

After proof approval, typical production is approximately 5–7 business days. The finished plan is folded, packaged and shipped by FedEx Ground. Shipping cost is calculated separately based on the project configuration and destination.

Large layouts may be produced in coordinated sections or panels. The project team should confirm any required delivery date before ordering, especially when the walkthrough is tied to a permitting, procurement, pre-slab, client-approval or installation milestone.

4. Deploy, Verify and Walk the Plan

The printed plan can be deployed on a suitable reasonably flat surface such as grass, dirt, gravel, slab, parking area, warehouse floor or other appropriate indoor or outdoor location. Wind, terrain, moisture, traffic, site access and the size of the layout should be considered before setup.

Many residential-size plans can be deployed by two people in roughly 20 minutes, but actual setup time depends on size, paneling, wind, terrain and the deployment method. When calibration references are printed, compare them with a standard tape measure before beginning the walkthrough.

Use the plan to discuss selected horizontal relationships represented in the current project information. Questions may involve room proportions, circulation, furniture and equipment footprints, doors, adjacencies, service access, selected site relationships or other plan-view conditions. Document unresolved questions and return approved changes to the governing project documents.

What the Printed Plan Is — and Is Not

A Big Floor Plan is a physical communication and review surface. It complements architectural drawings, BIM/VDC, renderings, models, surveying, field verification, mockups and professional design review. It does not replace them.

The flat print primarily represents horizontal geometry. It does not fully reproduce ceiling heights, slopes, overhead systems, wall volume, structural conditions, lighting, acoustics, finishes, mechanical performance or other three-dimensional and technical conditions.

Big Floor Plans does not provide architectural or engineering approval, construction layout, surveying, code certification, ADA certification, commissioning, professional inspection or a guarantee that a walkthrough will identify every issue, prevent rework, reduce change orders, save a specific amount, improve schedule performance or produce a particular project outcome.
